Jessica, I know you went to SCAD for interior design, what is an easy way for a mom to incorporate both fashion and function in their home?
I'd say less is more. I hardly have any decor on shelves, table tops, or counters (too much to dust anyway). I prefer to attach my decor to the "structure" of my house meaning have selected my lighting fixtures, paint colors with accent walls, hung tons of art work and every window has draperies. Every piece of furniture I own, I not only love the look of but it also serves a purpose- bringing the principal form follows function into my home.
What is the one room in the home, that you think is easiest to update with a few quick switches?
I'd say the living room. I just recently changed the look of mine by purchasing new throw pillows and blankets. I was just feeling plain bored with the look and was tempted to buy a new arm chair, BUT my husband, reminded me we just bought a chair for that room... 3 years ago! lol. Anyway, I had my eye on a plaid chair, so I went to the store and bought a plaid blanket, complementary throw pillow and sheep skin and BAM I had a new chair. I also updated the pillows and blankets on the couch.
What is your number one mom hack around the home?
My number one goal is to keep my house clean and tidy and figuring out how to do that without killing myself is an art that I am still trying to perfect. I'd say the key to success is to declutter almost to the point of becoming minimalist. I have been getting rid of things for the past few months, because I felt like ALL I was doing was putting things away, and it has been so FREEING! Chats with myself have helped tremendously with purging, for example "Jessica, are you seriously going to use these coupons?" Or "you haven't sat down to scrapbook in more than 10 years, are you really going to now?". lol. With toys, I have been rotating them out- this has been working so well, because every few weeks Maxwell is rediscovering a toy. Basically, I am trying to create intention in my house, everything serves a purpose (even if its just pretty and I love to look at it.) A couple of cleaning supplies that have helped my on my journey, is the Roomba and Norwex microfiber (cleaning without chemicals).
How did you hear about Fit4Mom?
I was searching for ways to lose all the baby weight I put on and came across a groupon for Fit4Mom. I have a friend that often posted about Stroller Strides in Fayetteville and was thrilled to learn there was one so close to me! I immediately signed up, but didn't start attending until my baby was 5 months old. I was so excited to start, but since I hadn't worked out in so long, I worried I wouldn't be able to keep up. During my first class, I quickly learned Stroller Strides is for any level!
What keeps you and Maxwell coming back?
First, the workouts are amazing! I gained nearly 50 pounds during my pregnancy and within a few short months, I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Second, the community of wonderful, strong mamas and the cute kiddos. I'm so thankful for the friendships I've made!
What is one thing about motherhood that has surprised you?
How quickly they grow and develop in the first year! It is absolutely amazing!
Our August mom of the month is Lauren. She is a full time mom to a sweet Kensington, a RN AND she is powering her way through grad school.
Eventhough Lauren is a super busy lady, she regularly attends Stroller Strides, and always has a smile on her face! We appreciate Lauren's work ethic and also her endless amounts of energy! Read more about what Lauren had to say about all things motherhood, Fit4Mom, and how she manages her time!
What is your favorite part of being a mom?
Being a mom is the best job anyone could ask for! My favorite would have to be those rare times when all my daughter wants to do is snuggle is the best feeling in the world.
Share with us your favorite mom hack?
Grocery shopping online and Amazon Prime are a must for moms. Being able to just pickup your groceries or order an item instead of having to run to the store with a toddler makes life so much easier.
You are a super busy lady, how do you get everything done?
Time management is KEY! Being a mom, working and Graduate school keeps things interesting but my main priority is being a mom. It helps that tasks such as cleaning and laundry to make it fun so that my princess wants to help. Also getting up early do homework in order to be able to spend more time with Kensington makes it possible to keep her as the priority.
How did you hear about Fit4Mom?
Fit4mom had posted a Facebook event for Mother’s Day and I thought it sounded like fun. We showed up and felt so welcomed. From that point on I knew this was something that her and I could do together and make new friends.
What keeps you coming back to Fit4Mom?
This group is someplace you come to work out, spend time with other mommas and never feel judged. From giving one another advice, being supported in your goals and the fun mom nights out make me love Fit4mom.
What recommendations/advice would you give to a new mom?
Being a mom is Hard work. Sometimes you think your going to be that mom who doesn’t do this or that but in truth you need to do what’s best for your little and family. Things may not always go as plan but enjoy the ride.
Tell us something we may not know about you?
Although I am very outgoing and like to talk I actually can be very quite and have a huge heart . I love helping others and am a “fixer”.
Our July mom of the month goes to our sweet ZiZi, and we could think of a million reasons to tell you why we love this sweet momma, and her cute family. Not only is ZiZi friendly and is always the first person to introduce herself when we have a new face but ZiZi is so selfless. She always thinks of others before herself and it shows when she is taking care of her precious little boy, Trevor. ZiZi is super kind, she is no doubt a super mom, and we are super lucky to get to call her a friend. Find out what ZiZi has to say below!
My car has a cloth storage bin in it with “EXTRA EVERYTHING “~ Toys, Diapers, Wipes,Snacks, Blankets(winter),Bibs, change of clothes, etc.
I can’t tell you how many times this Bin has saved me!
A sweet Friend told me about Stroller Strides when Trevor was almost 4 months old. After the first class I was Hooked! I was hesitant about putting my newborn in a gym daycare setting ~ This was the perfect way to stay close to my baby but also get an amazing workout in. I met some really nice Mama’s the first few weeks who are now my closest friends.
BODY BACK is my Happy Place! It is a Butt Kicking workout that leaves me sweaty & clear minded! The results are all what you put into it ~ so it makes you work for it that much harder. I’ve seen my strength grow tremendously over the past year.
“Don’t sweat the small stuff”.
(To be clear I still have to repeat this to myself on a daily basis! )
~What I mean by this is :
Enjoy the little moments you have with your baby!
All the things that I used to feel like just had to get done ASAP ( laundry, dishes, etc.) can wait now so I have can some quality time with my sweet little boy.
We love being outdoors! Going on the boat and swimming in the pool seems to be our weekend routine this summer.
Our June mom of the month , Jessica is the picture of strength in motherhood. Jessica participates in our BodyBack Program and in our RunClub. She never complains and always shows up with a smile on her face. Jessica is a mom to two sweet boys, Eli and Easton. She moved here a little over a year ago from Georgia, and has quickly found her village here in the Lake Norman area. Read more below about what Jessica says life is like as a mom and what is next for Team Easton!
1. What is the best part of being a mom?
I always knew that I wanted to be a mom one day, but I never imagined I would be a mom of twins! Being a mom has been the greatest gift I have ever been given. I love that I can love two people more than I ever thought possible. Watching my boys grow and become as strong as they have as three year olds makes every day worth it for me! Because of them I want to be my best possible self so that I can be a kick ass mom for them and show them that they can do and accomplish anything they dream of!
2. Do you have any mom hacks?
I never leave the house without a bag full of snacks and small toys, even if we are just going somewhere quickly. You never know when you will need it. I also always have our fold up training potty in the car and also take it in the stroller with me!
3. Best thing about having mom friends?
After a very tough first year of living in Charlotte for our family, joining the Fit4Mom program has been the best thing that has happened for me. With most of our first year spent in and out of the doctors offices, this program allowed me to make friends for the first time since being here. I firmly believe that having mom friends can save a mom from going crazy! Having someone to talk to (other than your husband...) that understands your day to day life is almost as good as having that glass of wine at the end of the day. Mom friends can help you confirm to yourself that you indeed are not going crazy and that there are others there that understand or are willing to help you out.
4. You recently completed a session of Body Back and RunClub what did you enjoy about the program?
After now completing two sessions of Body Back I would definitely encourage others to participate. With my kids being a little older, Stroller Strides is hard for me to get to every day, so this was the perfect way for me to get in my workouts while meeting great friends and other moms. Body Back has helped push me to be my best version of myself. The workouts are tough, but with the right instructors and momma friends you know that you can do it and you push yourself each and every time!
This first session of RunClub was amazing. I am and never have been a runner. Running was just never an interest of mine and I never felt like I could get into it. With RunClub being started to run a 5K that helped raise awareness for a good cause I knew it was the perfect time to give it a shot. Not only was I able to run the 5K, but I have surprised myself beyond measure and have continued running daily and running further distances.
**Whats Next for Team Easton :
After completing the Keep Pounding 5K with the help of Fit4Mom and raising over two thousand dollars, Team Easton will now be raising money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Foundation through the Light The Night Fundraiser that takes place in November. While we encourage people to donate now, we will also be holding an auction/raffle in August to raise money also. We already have lots of good items lined up, so stay tuned for a date!
Our May Mom of the month goes out to non other than our vey own sweet Sarah who has attended over 300 Stroller Strides Classes! Sarah is not only a mom to sweet Nora, she is a Physicians Assistant , we are pretty sure when you look up hard working in the dictionary you will find a picture of this Super Mom!
I joined when Nora was 4 months old to get some routine in our day. I was feeling out of shape and isolated, and SS helped me get out of the house and meet other moms.
I don’t know if I have any good hacks. Maybe just advice to always have snacks and don’t feel guilty about using them to “motivate” your child.
Come check out a stroller strides class, you won’t regret it!! More importantly, don’t isolate yourself, if you are stressed or need a break, ask for help. Remember to take care of yourself too, because you can’t pour from an empty cup.
My fav is the sense of community. I love getting to know other moms and being able to encourage them/ commiserate with them about Mom life. I look forward to spending time after class just talking and letting the kids play.
I recently completed my 300th Stroller Strides class.
We are so excited to have Jamie as our April 2018, mom of the month. Why? Because Jamie and her sweet girl are full of smiles. Jamie is possibly the sweetest mom you will ever meet! We are so happy to have her as part of our village!
I love being a mom! I love creating new family traditions and seeing Olivia experience new things. She’s teaching me to find excitement in the little things.
I found Fit4Mom while googling “gym with childcare”. I was really worrying about leaving her at a gym daycare, but I was not having any luck staying motivated to work out at home. I was really nervous to start coming, but I’m so glad I did!
I love being in a community of strong women. Being a mom is really hard and can be really overwhelming. Every time I go to class I’m inspired by all the hardworking moms who are juggling way more than me. The Fit4Mom BodyBack class taught me the importance of taking care of myself. I’m a better wife and mom when I take time for myself. I have so much more patience now! I
We moved to North Carolina from Indiana so we love to explore and find things that are unique to this area.
April is special to me because April 22-28th js National Infertility Awareness Week. I am able to be a mom because of IVF. It was a very difficult process, and I try to be a resource and support to everyone I meet who is also going through it. I am so thankful to be a success story!
